The little roan blinked her eyes, her vision still blurry from sleep. It came again, a gentle nudge to her backside. Turning her head, little Iora saw her dam standing there. The older mare looked exhausted, though the foal had no way of understanding what this meant. The birth had been a hard one and the mare had been worried that her foal would not live to see spring in its full glory. "Come along," the roan mare encouraged, giving Iora yet another nudge. This was a little more firm and Iora found herself rising to her feet with a small bleat of confusion. She received a small lick to the nose and then the mare urged her baby to feed. As Iora filled her belly with milk, the mare felt her energy drain away with each suck. She did not know what was wrong with her. The journey to the water's edge was slow and pleasant, there was no need to rush. The view was quite breath-taking and Iora thought that perhaps they could stick around for a little while.
